Putting Teachers Back at the Center of Learning
For Casey Cuny, the idea for WHIT Education took shape after seeing what happens when technology gets between teachers and their students. Cuny, who has been a teacher for 23 years, overheard his son, then a high school senior, question whether the detailed feedback he was receiving was actually written by his teacher. After watching him go through an entire AP Literature course without meaningful teacher feedback, Cuny saw his engagement with the class and the learning decline.
That experience reinforced a concern Cuny had already been seeing in the classroom: as schools adopt more AI and educational technology, students can end up receiving automated feedback or moving through digital modules without the teacher playing a meaningful role in the learning process. WHIT Education was created as a different kind of AI tool, one designed to give teachers better insight into student thinking and help them make more informed instructional decisions.
Designed by educators, WHIT Education focuses on formative assessment, writing, reasoning, and feedback. The platform helps districts deliver common formative assessments through teacher dashboards, while its patent-pending misconception engine analyzes student data to identify patterns in what students are struggling to understand. WHIT Education can then use that information to help build targeted Tier 2 intervention plans.
For Cuny, the challenge is not a lack of knowledge about effective teaching practices. It is the difficulty of implementing them consistently. By reducing the time and effort required to collect and analyze student evidence, WHIT Education aims to make formative assessment a more regular part of instruction while keeping teachers at the center of the learning cycle.
